Colectica to Present Tools for Metadata Standards at AAPOR<E2><80><99>s 68th Annual Conference in Boston

Boston, MA April 30, 2013

Colectica will present advances in survey metadata and data documentation at the annual conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR).

Colectica researchers Dan Smith and Jeremy Iverson will present at the annual conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and will also be located in the exhibition hall at booth 309 during the conference. AAPOR’s 68th Annual Conference, Asking Critical Questions: Toward a Sustainable Future for Public Opinion and Social Research, will focus on approaches that provide new analytic utility, improve efficiency, reduce costs, and address current methodological limitations.

Colectica will present "Colectica for Microsoft Excel: Increasing Transparency Using Open Standards" Friday May 17th at 3:15pm in the Commonwealth Complex A&B. Colectica for Excel is a free addin for Microsoft Excel and works with Excel 2007, 2010, and 2013. The software implements leading open standards including the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) Lifecycle version 3 and ISO 11179. This additional metadata information is stored natively inside the workbook using open standards for data documentation. Colectica for Excel can export data documentation to an XML file in the DDI Lifecycle metadata format. These standard XML files can be opened and edited from Colectica Designer, Colectica Express, or other DDI applications. The software also allows users who do not have Stata or SPSS installed on their machines to open files saved in .sav and .dta formats directly in Microsoft Excel.

"The additional metadata, stored using the DDI-Lifecycle standard for data documentation, adds additional value and opportunities for harmonization to Excel workbooks." stated Jeremy Iverson, a Partner at Colectica. He continued "Allowing users to open Stata .dta and SPSS .sav files from within Excel is an added bonus for the user."
